Background: here cw: torture, body horror, cannibalism

Personality: cw: torture, child abuse, spoilers
Kaneki began as a shy, reserved person with few friends. He was gentle and generally soft spoken and optimistic. He lacked assertiveness and it led to bullying and being taken advantage of, but for the most part he tried to remain altruistic. Beneath that altruism was a deep fear of being alone. His desire to protect others to avoid that loneliness led to him shouldering complete responsibility for things that he probably should have gotten help with. Though this might seem altruistic, Kaneki eventually has to confront that his motives are selfish: he doesn't want to be alone. This kind of thinking potentially has the opposite effect of putting his friends in danger, as he refuses to rely on anyone else for help. After being turned into a half-ghoul, he clung to his human side and had difficulty feeding at all until he found a way to do so that would assuage his guilt. Kaneki also had a habit of idealizing his relationships with other people, particularly his mother. It took him a long time (and his mind nearly breaking) to accept that his mother was not only weak but also abusive.
Despite witnessing atrocities committed by the CCG, an organization built to investigate ghoul activity and stop ghouls that pose a threat to human society, Kaneki believes that there can be some kind of middle ground, some way of co-existing if only the violence between the CCG and ghouls could be stopped. Twice, he refuses to kill Kotarou Amon, an investigator whose mentor was murdered by Kaneki's friends. In the first instance, Kaneki allows himself to be beaten and thrown around by Amon, refusing to truly fight back; in the second instance, their battle is far more heated but Kaneki refuses to resort to killing Amon.
After enduring intense torture, Kaneki's personality shifts. He lets go of his mother's ideology that being hurt was better than hurting others and instead embraces being ruthless, cruel, and brutal in order to protect his friends and place of belonging. Despite this, Kaneki generally maintains complete composure, regardless of how desperate a situation might be. He no longer fears or holds back his ghoul side, instead embracing it and becoming more violent during his battles. He is still capable of showing his gentle side to people he cares about, but he will instantly become ruthless at the hint of a threat.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Protecting people that are close to him, any instance that provoke him to violence
Sins: Selfish, prideful, cannibalism, wrath, gluttony
Powers/Abilities:
Ghoul physiology: Unique healing factor, impervious to or able to survive damage from most conventional weapons, predatory organ called a kagune that functions as a weapon; when the kagune is active, ghouls have enhanced mobility and are even more resiliant. This physiology also contributes to superhuman strength, speed, pain tolerance, regeneration, and endurance. Due to hybrid vigor, it is believed Kaneki abilities are more potent than those of natural-born ghouls.

[Kaneki starts recording before he's settled. He flops onto his bed and holds the phone above him so he's staring into the screen. For a long moment, he just looks. Then he sighs.]
Is there anyone here that honestly feels like they shouldn't be? I'm curious. It seems like this kind of punishment always inspires some kind of I didn't do it! and I want to know if anyone here feels that way. Like someone made a mistake or that you don't deserve this.
The whole point of being here is atonement, right? How's that going for everyone else?
[He looks away and frowns slightly. His stomach is knotted with hunger. He can't wait much longer. lolls his head to look at the camera again.]
While I have your attention. I have unique dietary needs and I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting what I need here. Are we supposed to talk to Lucifer or just fend for ourselves?
